  Breathlessness :

I keep having a feeling that I can’t breathe and it makes me panic. What can I do about it?

It all comes down to a question of space! It gets pretty crowded in that body of yours as you host this other person. So the feeling of breathlessness is caused by the pressure of the growing uterus pushing against your lungs. Actually your lungs are coping better than you realise and your lung capacity is keeping pace with the increasing demands of your enlarging body. So, although you may feel as though you aren’t getting enough oxygen, your oxygen intake has probably increased. Do not let this breathless feeling put you off taking some gentle exercise, as this still has great benefit. However it is vital that you do not over exercise, so be sensible and listen to the message of your body. It is also a call for good posture, as this will improve your breathing. Experiment with an extra pillow if you are breathless at night.

During the last month of pregnancy, even though the baby continues to grow, your uterus may drop (move down into the pelvis in preparation for birth) and this can provide enormous relief. If you are not experiencing this problem, don’t worry: it is probably due to the way you are carrying the baby.

What is not normal is if you have other symptoms such as blue extremities or lips. If your chest hurts and your heart is pounding then you should contact your doctor immediately.
