Why might you need a Caesarean Section?

C-sections can be unplanned or planned. Unplanned caesareans are applied when either mother or baby experience serious trouble before or during labour or delivery. Most common circumstances are problems with the umbilical cord, bleeding from the placenta or slow progress of labour. Occasionally maternal illness causes a caesarean birth, like heart disease, active herpes and HIV infection, in which case the decision could be taken some time in advance of the event. An abnormal foetal position or in some cases maternal diabetes could be as well responsible for a planned c-section. Your doctor may prescribe a caesarean for other reasons that he will discuss with you. The main thing to remember is that these decisions are taken with the aim of optimum mother and child health as the driving factor.
