What birth option is commonly recommended?
In this century women have more delivery alternatives than
ever before. The most common option is still the hospital,
but there are different possibilities too. Many hospitals
now offer birthing rooms for woman having 'normal' deliveries.
Here mothers can stay with their partners throughout the
whole experience and are able to be active participants
in the birthing process. A few hospitals provide family
centered care, which is similar to the birthing room option.
You are allowed to bring people to support you, and you
will get a very comfortable and private environment to deliver.
Occasionally hospitals offer the possibility to deliver
in a birth chair, where you are almost sitting and thus
using gravity to assist the process. Sometimes also water
births are preffered, but this concept is more common among
midwifes than with doctors.
In some cases hospitals offer a variety of these options.
Often the mother is permitted to have the newborn next to
her, not only for a few minutes after the birth.
